Whether it’s your own bed, a guest bed or the kids’ bunk beds, a styled and well-made bed creates a sacred space for rest, relaxation and getting some (much needed) sleep.
The Wesorick Project Primary Bedroom is the perfect space to walk you through our top bed-making tips. The contrast of the neutral upholstered headboard against the wood furniture pieces make this space feel warm and inviting — and a wonderful foundation to start with. On this king-size bed, we added lots of layers and pillows, combining muted colors, patterns and textures, to create a cozy look and feel for this primary suite.
So what’s the secret to a well-made bed? Join Jackie and Karen, Basil + Tate’s design duo, as they break it down step by step…
step 1 | the sheets
We always start with fresh, neutral-toned, high-quality bed sheets. A classic white shade is our go-to color choice nearly every time. These make the foundational layer of your bedding — after the bed frame, headboard and mattress, of course!
step 2 | a quilt or blanket
A good quality medium-weight quilt, or a nice and cozy blanket that you’ll sleep under is a must for any bed. Layer this over the sheets as your second step before adding a top layering piece.
step 3 | the duvet
Adding the duvet insert and cover create the perfect fluffy finishing layer — and there are so many choices to choose from. Consider opting for a split duvet with separate inserts depending on sleeping temperature preferences, or switch out your duvet insert seasonally for a lighter weight during summer months and a heavier weight in the winter.
step 4 | pillows & more pillows
Pillows, pillows, pillows! Don’t be afraid to add a few brighter pops of color here — decorative throw pillows can be refreshed more easily over time as needed. For a king-size bed, your two king-size pillows in shams will be the first layer of pillows. (Bonus tip: pillows for sleeping can be tucked behind!) Then, add three larger pillows that will make up the next layer, followed by two smaller throw pillows and a nice sized lumbar pillow.
step 5 | a cozy throw
Layers are the key to making your bed an inviting and restful space. For your final step, we find adding a cozy knit or plush throw blanket at the end of the bed is the perfect touch. Voilà!
