There is no shortage of beautiful rooms on Instagram or Pinterest — and nearly every client of ours has a Pinterest board full of gorgeous inspiration photos they have pinned. We love going through these pictures with our clients and talking about what they love about each space. A lot of times, it’s the furniture or the paint colors or a light fixture — but what people don’t often realize when they’re looking at these beautiful spaces is that it isn’t ONLY the furniture, the paint colors, the light fixtures — it’s the walls that give rooms so much character.
The rooms that really stand out have so much attention to detail that the longer you look, the more you see because good design has lots of layers. This attention to details is what ELEVATES these spaces and takes them from pretty to STUNNING! Behold the power of custom carpentry! Whether it’s shiplap or board and batten or ceiling beams or custom built-ins — these architectural details make. the. room! Today, we’re going to focus on one of our favorites here at Basil + Tate: board and batten.
Board and batten combines two different types of wood — the board, which is the flat paneling that covers any texture on the wall, and the batten, the small strips of wood used to make the design and most importantly — covers the seams of the boards below it. There are endless ways to create the pattern of the battens. The only real limitation is the size of the boards since you don’t want to have any seams exposed.
We have been designing with it for years, and we have compiled some of our favorite inspirational photos to showcase just how beautiful it can be!
The Nowicki project has so many different types of architectural details because our clients believed in the power of custom carpentry. We are so glad they did because this home was a dream to design! We opted for board and batten in both the mudroom and the wall going down the staircase. We also mimicked that same shaker look on the columns as well.
We have a few projects with board and batten that have ‘before and after’ photos to illustrate my point. Although the entire room was transformed, try to imagine how ‘blah’ each of these spaces would be without the board and batten. It just ELEVATES a room in a way that furniture and accessories alone cannot.

Here are a few other spaces that were elevated through the use of board and batten by some of our favorite designers…
Traditional board and batten has a simple, shaker-style construction but look at what the addition of a piece of molding can do to the entire vibe. It totally dresses it up and changes the look completely.
Carpenters are our best friends and the architectural elements they can add to a space ELEVATE a room in a way that is magical. We love designing custom carpentry, so let us help you design your next space and bring out all of its potential with architectural elements that make your room stand out from the rest!
